Master program

Currently 4 Master’s degrees accredited or co-accredited by Paul Sabatier University participate in the TESS Master program through some of their specialisation courses. The courses in these Masters represent the heart of the TESS training, whose objective is to offer the best students attractive professional perspectives in the field of Space and Earth Sciences. A reinforced study program is offered for all students recruited on the TESS program, up to 30 additional ECTS spread over the two years of the Master for a total of 150 ECTS on training (see the attached document for more details on the organisation of the courses).

1. Specialised courses in Master degree (M2) involved in TESS

For all Master’s students, the second year consists in a specialisation path, the list of which is described below for the four Master’s degrees offered by the University of Toulouse III Paul Sabatier within TESS.

2. Observation Oriented Projects

In order to strengthen the students’ instrumental and observational expertise, observation projects will be carried out over the two years of the Master’s programme, implementing measurement campaigns from design to analysis of the results (6 ECTS). These projects will include a field and/or laboratory approach using the observation structures of TESS partner laboratories.

3. Specific cross-disciplinary courses

A series of cross-disciplinary courses, organized over dedicated weeks, is offered to TESS students around the following three themes. Each course is validated by 3 ECTS. These specific courses will be taught in English.

  • Course on data acquisition and processing in Earth and space sciences (measurement techniques, fundamentals of space instrumentation and laboratory experiments)
  • Course on data processing (databases and data mining, image processing and artificial intelligence, digital modeling)
  • More general course on environmental applications related to society (economy of global change, social adaptability, environmental jurisdiction)

4. Common courses for transversal skills

In order to strengthen the group’s cohesion, and create a shared culture, the transversal skills courses (English, communication, project management, entrepreneurial skills), which exist in all Master courses, will be grouped together for all students of the EUR.

5. Reinforced research internship

TESS students must complete a research internship during their second year of the Master. This will be extended compared to the minimum requirements of the Masters, and students will be encouraged to go abroad for their internship, thanks to the many international partners involved in the EUR. Outgoing mobility funding will be offered to students, and 6 additional ECTS will be awarded for this reinforced internship.

6. Interdisciplinary courses

Interdisciplinary options are offered, in order to broaden the scientific horizons of the students: space weather, exoplanets, planetary crusts and their resources, carbon cycle, water cycle, contaminants and pollution… Each TESS student will choose 3 courses (3 ECTS each) to follow during the second year of the Master. These courses will also be open to doctoral students enrolled in the SDU2E doctoral school and participating in the TESS programme.
